The 1999 Indoor County Championships was held at Stony Brook University. The indoor facility was designed with a spectator overhang around the entire track. Everyone was waiting for the showdown between two of the best distance runners in the nation, and the entire upper level was filled and charged with excitement. The first race was the 3000m run and it delivered. To this day, some would say it was the greatest race in Suffolk County history. Both athletes exchanged leads throughout the race. Jillian Mastroianni was slightly ahead on the final stretch and Donovan pulled up even at the finish. Fully automatic timing was not as readily available during this time and the officials needed to make a determination. Both athletes were assigned the same time of 9:54.2, but Donovan was awarded the victory. The 1500m was no less exciting. In this race, Donovan was leading on the last straightaway and Mastroianni pulled up on her shoulder but was unable to pass her. Donovan was in 4:46.6 and Mastroianni finished a single tenth of a second behind. Cheers rained down from above as two county championships were decided by only a tenth of a second.

Gina started her throwing career at Hills with a bang by setting a freshman state record for the indoor shot put with a throw of 39-05. Yet it was the discus in which she excelled. Her first state title was in that event during her junior year where she threw 145-09. During her senior year, both events seemed to click. She was indoor state champion in the shot put (41-01.75) and outdoors she unleased a Section XI best of 170-05. LoMonaco passed on trying to repeat as state champion to go up against the nation's very best at The Golden West Invitational in California where she placed second.

Kristy Longman was a State Cross Country Champion in the Fall of 2005. However, she lost by only 0.05 seconds in the 1000m run at the Indoor State Championships. According to her coach, Jim Zeitler, it would took strength and perseverance for her to become a champion once again during the outdoor season. Luckily for Longman, she was blessed with both. The Section XI bus ride up to St. Lawrence University in Canton NY took 11 hours. The weather for the day was very windy and it rained so hard that the university opened their indoor facility so that athletes could escape the elements and warm-up for their races. Longman was not going to allow the adverse conditions stop her from achieving her goal. When the race was over, she celebrated a 0.10 second victory over the second-place finisher. Zeitler had told her before the race, “the conditions are the same for everyone, you just have to overcome it”. Luckily, she was able listen to her coach’s great advice.

It all started in the fourth grade for Lisa Kutzing as a member of the Infant Jesus Track Club. From the very beginning, Kutzing showed the potential that would eventually lead her to four consecutive Indoor National titles in the 1500m race walk. In addition, she won numerous Outdoor Race-Walking National titles at various distances. Each year she competed in National Age Group Track and Field Championships in Louisiana, to North Carolina, to California, and back to Louisiana where she won her first National title in the 3000m race walk. Mary Liz McCurdy was on a hot streak on a cold day in January of 2005. After breaking the Suffolk record in the 1000m run the previous Saturday, Mary Liz knew she was ready to run fast. A snowstorm postponed the League II Championship Meet on Saturday. But a little snow wasn’t about to stop McCurdy. She hopped on a train and headed to Manhattan’s 168th Street Armory to deliver another record-breaking performance, this time in the one-mile run. Her victory earned her the chance to compete in the prestigious Millrose High School Mile. But McCurdy, a great leader and teammate, turned it down so that she could run with Bay Shore’s 4x400m relay at the same meet, since athletes are not allowed to compete in any other events if they are to compete in the mile. Mary Liz was a very important member of Bay Shore’s amazing string of three consecutive National Championship 4x800m relay teams. (2003 - 8:53.26, 2004 – 8:57.48, and 2005 – 8:56.21) She also was the lead-off runner on the National record (11:33.42) Distance Medley relay team in 2003. Her 3:31 split for the 1200m leg was the fastest time for that distance recorded by a female high school runner. Her personal bests included: 2:09 800m split, 2:50.74 1000m, 4:28.54 1500m, and 4:52.88 mile.

Mike Ruiz from Newsday best summed up Harris’ senior year in an article covering the 2017 Indoor National meet; “When Lauren Harris steps onto the track, there’s electricity in the air that something special, something possibly historic, could be in the making.” Suffolk County has always had a rich tradition in race walk yielding Olympians, national and state champions. Lauren Harris, a 2017 graduate of Sachem East, was Section XI’s latest phenom in this elite group of athletes. Harris was the first high schooler to break seven minutes for the indoor mile walk during Nationals in her junior year. She came back in her senior year to better that mark to 6:53.44 FAT. Once again, electrifying the crowd and providing the spectators the opportunity to witness history.

Callie Hogan has been a member of two storied programs (Bay Shore and Villanova) in cross-country and track and field. Sometimes it is difficult for an athlete to make a mark in programs with such deep histories. Hogan handled this pressure in stellar fashion. When Bay Shore was losing ten seniors and four All-American members from their team in 2005-2006 school year, continuing the tradition of success would largely fall on Hogan’s shoulders. Luckily, she was up for the task and exceeded the expectation of many. Strong finishes in cross country led to high place finishes at the state level for indoor and outdoor seasons, so the team success continued. During her senior year, Hogan finished the task of etching her own name in the tradition when she won an Indoor State title in the 3000m and topped it off with a National title in the One-Mile run.

In 2007, Callie teamed up with Sarah McCurdy, Tenica Roberts, and Alexa DeLyra to win the National Scholastic Distance Medley Championships (11:48.54). After graduation, Hogan attended Villanova University and had a very successful career. While at Villanova, she was a member of two National NCAA Championship teams (2009 & 2010) and four Big East Championship teams (2008-2011). As a freshman, in the 2007-2008 school year, Hogan won the ECAC Cross Country Championships (17:48) at Van Cortland Park followed by an Indoor Mile Championship (4:49.64).

Lee had one of the most successful careers as a distance runner in Section XI history. Katherine was hard working and demonstrated leadership and sportsmanship qualities to boot. It was not uncommon to see her wait near the finish line to congratulate all that competed against her. She was also a great teammate, forgoing personal accolades to compete on relays. At the end of her junior outdoor season, Lee ran two relays at New Balance Nationals helping Shoreham – Wading River capture national titles in both the 4 X 1-Mile Relay and the 4 x 800m relay. Both winning times set Section XI records for the events.

Lee went to Georgetown University for her collegiate career. Due to unfortunate timing of injuries and Covid cancellations, she did not reach the heights that she did in high school. The heights that she could reach were still spectacular. She rewrote the record book for distances from 1000 meters up to the two-mile events. Indoors her PR’s include 2:46.91 (1000m), 4:28.58 (1500m), 4:46.61 (Mile Run), 9:37.77 (3000m) and 10:34.89 (Two-mile). Outdoors she set personal bests of 2:11.33 (800m), 4:23.48 (1500m), 9:26.78 (3000m), and 10:33.96 (3200m). Lee has the Section XI record for the Sunken Meadow 5K course (18:10.4) and is number seven on the All-time lists for the venue.

Vanessa Stewart was one of the top throwers in the nation and had been that way for three years straight. She had made her way to the New York State Indoor and Outdoor Championships each of those years. Yet an upstate athlete had kept her from reaching her ultimate goal. As a senior during the 2010 outdoor season, Stewart had one last chance. What it took was a little extra inspiration from her grandmother. Her grandmother had passed away two months earlier and had said to Vanessa: “Can you do me one favor and win the states? You never did before and I know you’ve always wanted it, so do me that favor and win it.” Stewart was able to make her dream come true when she won the D-1 State Championship with a throw of 46’ 2.5”. She then came back the next day and won the Federation title by uncorking a throw of 47’ 0”.

Shannon Weeks had the talent to start her track career as a freshman placing top six in New York State in the 400mH. After switching events, Weeks went on to become a National Champion in the 800m as a junior. For her senior year, Weeks came back to the 400mH as if she had unfinished business and won the state title. Weeks won State or National titles in the 400mH, 600m, 800m, and 1000m. Her accomplishments not only took natural ability, but it also hard work. According to her coaches, Shannon took her training very seriously. She put a lot of physical and mental energy into achieving her goals as an athlete. Because of this dedication, it is little wonder that she is one of the best and most versatile middle distance runner Suffolk County has ever seen.
